This operation is crucial, because the ability of the soundboard to amplify the vibration of the strings depends in large part on its flexibility - the more rigid (thick), the less responsive. There are other factors, of course - the dimensions of the case, and the position and dimensions of the cutoff bar and ribs/soundbars on the underside of the soundboard
