Buff batten

Showing the buff batten - a sliding batten just behind the 8' nut with small blocks of soft leather (or thick felt) attached; when the 'buffs' are brought into contact with the strings by operating the brass lever, they mute the tone, creating a semi-pizzicato effect when the note is played
