The jacks return to position by the aid of gravity, and the top of their travel is also arrested by a padded jackrail secured by a hook at one end and an open mortice and tenon at the other. To reduce the time taken removing and replacing this when 'voicing' the instrument (cutting the quills down to a length and strength that allows an even finger pressure across the whole register), a temporary jackrail is made to rest over the sides of the instrument
