Luna's 11th birthday box

Maple and yew. Intended for storage of Luna's collection of polished crystals and stones - hence the robust construction. I made plenty of machining mistakes, using a new lock mitre bit that created serious tear-out. I had to abandon it, cut the overall box size down, and use standard mitres. You can just see where I have filled the small remaining grooves. The second mistake was in machining the rebate for the yew bandings. I made two passes on the bottom rather than the top, and had to fill them. I cut too much out for the hinge rebates, and had to fill them too. Creating a shape for the brass escutcheon was hard, because it was right on a knot in the maple. Finally I tried high density polyethylene runners to make removing the inner boxes easier - it didn't help much so I left the other original wood runners in place and used some extra soft tallow to grease them. The bottom of the box has a plaque screwed to it, concealing a small shaped recess for the spare key, and a stamped message from the maker to Luna.
